 THE TRAILS

Saturday,  March 13, 2010

The trails are closed. Come see us next season!

------------------------------------------------------

Saturday,  February 27, 2010

The last few bright sunny days have taken its toll on the trails around Winnebago. There are some very good spots but in between them there are quite a few bare spots. There are a couple trails that run along roads and they are pretty much shot.

Hopefully we get more snow soon!

------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday,  February 24, 2010

Sno-Glider trails are currently in good condition. There is the most snow when you head South or West from Winnebago. The temps are expected to be in the single digits and teens at night and are not supposed to get above freezing through the weekend.

------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday,  February 16, 2010

The trails are in fair condition. There are many thin spots from the sunny days we have had.

------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday,  February 10, 2010

The trails have received about 7" of snow and they should be in good condition. There are some icy areas under the snow that need to be watched for. Ride Safe. We hope to groom all our trails by this weekend.

------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Well, good news and bad news! The good is that all the corn has been harvested from the Sno-Glider Trails. The bad is that the rain and warmer temps have taken it's toll on the trails. Most trails are in poor condition and should not be rode until we get a good snowfall to cover them.

------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, January 17, 2010

The trails have held up amazingly well given the lack of any new snow. There are many thin areas in the corners but the majority of the trails are covered. Any sections that use the road shoulders are bare. The groomer has been broke down but is repaired now. Grooming will resume when the weather gets colder.

------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, December 31, 2009

The Sno-Glider trails have all been groomed in the last couple days. Watch for ice in areas that were flooded from the rains last week.

Have a Happy New Year and Ride Safe!!!

------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, December 26, 2009

Be careful of standing water, slush and snow covered ice from the previous rains! Use caution when riding because many of these areas can not be seen until you are already in them. The fresh new white snow is light and thin but still hides the hazards pretty good. Many trail signs are also covered with snow. If you come upon any snow covered signs please clean them off for the next riders. Stay on the marked trails and expect early season conditions.

------------------------------------------------------

 Monday, December 21, 2009

Winnebago area trails are now complete. The southern most east/west trail between Westfield and Osborn Rds does have a short detour around some standing corn. Expect early season conditions and the forecast does not look good for the next couple days. Hopefully it will stay cold and we get snow instead of rain.

Please stay on the marked trail and respect the landowners!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

------------------------------------------------------

December 7, 2009

Just to update you on the local trails. Nearly every trail leading from Winnebago has at least one field of corn still standing. After this predicted storm has passed, we will assess the options for each trail. If significant drifting and wind create impossible conditions to harvest the corn in the near future, we will consider re-routes of the trails. This will basically mean ditch riding. To make matters worse, some of the re-routes include ditches that are not friendly to snowmobiles.

If this storm produces snow as predicted, please do not attempt to ride the trails, as they will lead you to an impassable corn field, or an area that could not be marked due to hunting season. The other clubs in the area have the same situations. If you do ride, ride the ditches, using caution for obstacles.

Thanks to those who have helped to put the trails in so far this season. It’s been tough with the mud, crops, and hunting seasons.

We will update you as soon as possible.

Happy Holidays!!!

Please stay between the markers!!!

There are many hazards out there that are very near the trails. We mark around holes, ruts, rocks, trees, fences and any other obstacles that we cannot move. If you ride outside of the marked trails you risk hitting one of these hazards. Also we lose land every year because of people riding off the trails. The landowners let us use their land. Lets ride where they want us to, so we may keep riding there!

Make sure to give the Groomer Drivers a "Thumbs Up" when you see them.
They could be out there riding like you, but instead they're out there making sure you have a much smoother ride!

STAY ON THE MARKED TRAILS,
RESPECT THE LANDOWNERS
AND RIDE SAFE!

Prior Seasons Reports

2008-2009

------------------------------------------------------

Monday, March 23, 2009

Most Winnebago trail marking signs have been removed for the season. Several fields have deep washouts from the recent heavy rains. If there is significant snow this weekend, do not attempt to ride the trail system. We have had a safe, problem free season again. Let's make sure it stays that way.

------------------------------------------------------

Monday, February 23, 2009

The Sno-Glider Trails are closed as are most if not all of the Illinois trails.

------------------------------------------------------

Saturday PM, February 21, 2009

We have received just over 4" and most of it has blown into the ditches. I have seen a few riders out on the trails and in the ditches. Be careful of the culverts in those ditches! Also on the trails expect early season conditions as most of the base is gone and the snow is thin. There are areas on the trails with ice and frozen drifts covered by new snow, so use caution.

------------------------------------------------------

Saturday AM, February 21, 2009

The Winnebago Sno-Glider Trails are still closed. We only received about 3" of snow from this storm and most of it has blown into the ditches!

------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, February 8, 2009

The Winnebago Sno-Glider Trails are closed. It looks like the warm weather is here for the next few days. There is snow and colder temps forecast for the end of the week.

------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, February 1, 2009

The warmer temps were very hard on the Winnebago Trails. The conditions today are now poor in some areas. Around town it is very thin and muddy in some spots. Other areas outside of town are still fine. The temps are to be cold until the end of the week with snow showers expected and then up to the mid 40's. It is a good chance that that will be the end of riding until we get more snow. Tomorrow is Ground Hog Day and the forecast is partly cloudy. Let's just hope that when he comes out of his den that there is some sun shining and he sees his shadow and it scares him back into his den for another 6 weeks of winter!

------------------------------------------------------

Friday, January 23, 2009

The groomer was out today and will finish the Winnebago Trails tomorrow. It is a bit thin around town but fine as soon as you get out a little ways. Everything looks good well through next week.

------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, January 18, 2009

The groomer has been out smoothing things up for everyone.  The temps are up in the 20's now to make riding much more enjoyable. The low last week on Thursday in Winnebago was 27 degrees BELOW ZERO! The trail sections that are on chisel plowed fields may still be a bit rough, use caution!

------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, January 10, 2009

The Sno-Glider Trails are OPEN!

Be careful of snow covered ice from the previous rains! The farther north you go on the Sno-Glider trails the snow depths rise significantly.

------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, December 27, 2008

The Sno-Glider Trails are Closed. Too much rain & warm temps.

------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, December 21, 2008

The southmost East-West trail that runs between Osborne and Westfield Roads is closed.  This is due to high water which makes it impossible to cross the creek in the woods. This trail section is marked with Trail Closed signs at each end.

------------------------------------------------------

Friday, December 19, 2008

The Sno-Glider Trails are OPEN!!!

We received between 6" and 8" of snow overnight, more north, less south. This was a heavier snow that should make the trails set in very well. Use caution when riding the trails and ditches!

Please obey the trail signs and STAY ON THE MARKED TRAILS!!!

------------------------------------------------------

Monday, December 15, 2008

The Sno-Glider Trails are CLOSED. The warm weekend and the rain melted most of our snow.

------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

The Sno-Glider Trails are all in. For those that know the trails some areas have been rerouted around standing corn. For those that don't know the trails, you won't notice a thing! Please use caution when riding early season trails and especially when riding ditches where there are many culverts, right of way markers, utility poles/boxes and field entrances.  We hope to have trail maps available by next week. They are taking a bit longer than expected this year.

------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, November 30, 2008

Winnebago IL area trails maintained by the Winnebago Sno-Gliders are CLOSED.

Most Snowmobile Trails in N. Central Illinois which are in Winnebago, Ogle, Lee and Eastern Stephenson counties are only open from DECEMBER 15 to MARCH 15, and there must be AT LEAST 4 INCHES OF SNOW ON THE TRAILS!!! Check with the local snowmobile club for info on snowmobile trail accessibility. For snowmobile club info visit the Illinois Assoc. of Snowmobile Clubs at:  www.ilsnowmobile.com

The trails are not finished being marked yet. Almost all of the Illinois trails run across farm land. Not all the crops have been harvested yet in some areas. We do not want people riding a trail and find out it stops at a standing corn field. Because then they either ride where they are not suppose to or run down the corn. Both have happened in the past! If someone tells you that a trail is open before Dec. 15, that does not mean that all the trails connected to it are open.

Also next weekend is deer season. As well as being a very dangerous time to snowmobile, the landowners that hunt do not want snowmobilers on their property scaring off the deer. We do not want to be shut out of any trail sections because of upset landowners. You can't ride in other states during deer season, why would you ride here?

The ditches along most county roads are available to ride but can also be very dangerous. Please watch for all the culverts, right of way markers and utility poles/boxes. Remember there are always culverts & field entrances for about every farm field you ride next to. Snowmobilers must also abide by all state and local laws when riding along roads.

All of these trails are put in by CLUB MEMBERS, volunteering their time to put in the snowmobile trails so everyone can ride them. If you ride the trails you should belong to the local snowmobile club. This would help either physically or monetarily to support the trails you ride.

With your help the trails could be finished faster!!!

2007-2008

------------------------------------------------------
Monday, March 3, 2008
The trails are closed.

Too much rain & warm weather
took its toll on our snow!
------------------------------------------------------
Monday, February 25, 2008
The new snow has the trails in very good shape.
The wind is forecast to be gusting at 40 mph tomorrow.
Watch for ice under the snow. There is a good solid
base under the trail but it is ice in some locations.
------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, February 24, 2008
The trails can't have much, if any loose snow on them.
There have been a few sleds out running though.
Tomorrow they are calling for 6 or more inches
of new snow. The trail base is still hard and flat.
------------------------------------------------------
Monday, February 18, 2008
The trails are closed.
The rain and warm temps were just too much.
There is still a base but no loose snow.
There is also too much standing water on the trails.
------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, February 17, 2008
It is raining this morning with up to
2" total
rain expected. There is supposed to be
2" of snow coming after the rain. The trails
were groomed flat and hard as of last night.
If they can handle this rain they may be OK
after we get the snow. It is supposed to be
cold again for the next few days but there
will be standing water or ice from this storm.
Expect creek crossings to be deeper than usual!

------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, February 7, 2008
The groomer was out today.
The trails are excellent except for a few
wet spots that should soon firm up.
Remember to stay between the trail markers!
The landowners are letting us use their land.
Please respect it!!!
------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday, February 6, 2008
IT"S HERE!!!
We have about 14" of new snow from the storm.
This is the heavier snow that should
smooth things out for us.
BE CAREFUL! THERE WAS RAIN BEFORE
THE SNOW AND SOME LOW AREAS
& DITCHES HAVE WATER COVERED BY SNOW.
------------------------------------------------------
Monday, January 28, 2008
January thaw #2 was here today 46°, trails are closed!
Blizzard Warning out for tomorrow!!!
Isn't this midwest weather just great???
------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, January 22, 2008
The groomer has been out! There isn't a lot of snow but the trails are covered and people are out riding.
------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, January 8, 2008
January thaw is early this year 55° today, trails are closed!
Time to get the sleds shined up and ready for the next dumping of snow.
Hopefully that will be soon!
------------------------------------------------------
Friday, December 28, 2007
The trails are open! 6" of heavy snow fell today. The blowing snow this week has filled in any chiseled plowed fields so most trails are in good shape. The temps look good for the next week to hold the snow.
------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, December 20, 2007
Well the warm temps and rain took their toll on the trails. The President says as of today they are officially closed. Hopefully the weekend will bring more cold and snow before Christmas.
------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, December 18, 2007
All Winnebago Sno-Gliders trails are in pretty good shape. Reports are good heading toward Byron and also Pecatonica. Hopefully the predicted warm air will not hurt much this week.
